Places to Visit

Alibag
It is located 100 Kms. south of Mumbai. It can be reached from Mumbai by road or by sea in two hours. Due to its beautiful nature and close proximity to Mumbai, it was chosen as capital of Raigad (formerly called Kolaba) by British, The Raigad District Govt. offices, District court and District Hospital are located in Alibag.

The ancient Kolaba sea fort is located very close to beach. The fort can be reached on foot during low tide periods. The Ganesh devotees can get darshan of Ganesh with trunk on right which is considered rare. The well in the fort has unsalted water which was provided to Alibag in olden days.

Varsoli
It is adjourning Alibag in north direction. Varsoli is famous for its calm and clean beach. It is a popular tourist spot which is frequently visited by beach loving people of Mumbai, Pune and other parts of Maharashtra. The beach is not crowded and hence is quiet. The sea water is also clean. It is pleasure to watch sunset and blue sky and stars at night.

Thal
It is located 4 Kms. north of Alibag. It has quiet and clean beach from where the Ancient Khanderi, Underi sea forts can be seen. Thal is proud that the huge R.C.F. plant is located there which has provided employment to many local residents. Another place of interest in Thal is, Datta Mandir, located on top of the hill nearby. Aerial view of Alibag can be seen from the hill. The hill can be reached by car.

Kihim
It is located 8 Kms north of Alibag. It has calm and clean beach. Residential accommodation is available in Maharashtra Govt owned M.T.D.C. resort located on the beach. Kankeshwar An ancient Shankara Mandir on a hill in Kankeshwar which is located on the east of Kihim is popular place for devotees of god Shankara. Kankeshwar is also favourite of trekkers.

Awas & Sasawane
The 2 villages are located 18 Kms north of Alibag. Sasawane is famous for the Karmarkar sculpture museum which is worth seeing. From Awas Sasawane beach, Mumbai skyline can be seen during day & at night Mumbai skyline looks like illuminated with lights. The Nagoba Mandir at Awas is worth visiting.

Rewas & Mandwa
The port towns are located 22 Kms north of Alibag. Since long, Launch service is available between Mumbai's "Bhaucha Dhakka" to Revas. Lately, Catamaran service available between gateway of India and Mandwa which has made it convenient & fast to commute between Mumbai & Alibag. The catamaran takes only 45 minutes to reach Mandwa from Mumbai to cover the distance of 12 nautical miles. There is connecting Bus from Mandwa to Alibag which takes half an hour. The catamaran ticket includes the charge for the bus.

Akshi & Nagaon
Are located 5 Kms south of Alibag. These 2 villages have cluster of coconut & beetlenut trees which makes the places scenic. The sea front at Akshi/Nagaon is very popular with cine fratenity as a good place for film shooting. Nagaon boasts of an Ancient and beautiful temples and place for Ved-vidya.

Chaul, Revadanda
The Ancient Chaul / Revadanda are located 16 Kms. south of Alibag. Chaul has 2000 years history. The port at Chaul was used for trade with Gulf & European countries by sea in olden days.

During the Maratha Regime, Chaul had 350 lakes & same number of temples. Of this temples, only 40 to 50 are still there. Famous among them are, Shitaladevi, Rameshwar and Datta Mandir on hill.

Portugese came to chaul 400 years back. The fort and the Observation tower named "Satkhani" built by them still exist.

The spices, fruits & flower trees are plenty in Chaul. Revadanda was formerly a part of chaul. The bridge constructed on Revadanda/Salav made it convenient to travel to Murud & Janjira. The Vikram Birla group Ispat Sponge Iron plant is located in Salav. The beautiful Ganesh temple built by Birlas at Salav is an attraction for tourists. The light illumination of the temple at night is worth seeing. The temple is located 4 Kms from the end of Revadanda/ Salav bridge. On the way to Murud Janjira from Revadanda, in between there is a beautiful and famous Kashid beach. Murud &Janjira, which are located 50 Kms from Alibag are also famous for beautiful beaches and a fort at Janjira.

The 8 villages, Awas, Sasawane, Kihim, Thal, Akshi, Nagaon, Chaul & Revadanda together are called Ashtagar. Many industrialists and business personalities have built palatial houses at these places in Ashtagar which also has made them popular
